BBMB scam: Senior officials suspended over alleged theft of zinc blocks at Nangal workshop
PTC Web Desk: A major scam has come to light at the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), where zinc blocks worth lakhs were allegedly stolen while being transported to the disposal yard from the Nangal workshop. Following an internal investigation, several officials, including a Junior Engineer (JE) and a storekeeper, have been suspended, while a letter has been sent to BBMB's senior management requesting the suspension of an SDO-rank officer.
As per initial findings, 24 zinc blocks were dispatched from the BBMB Nangal workshop to the disposal yard, but never reached their destination. When questioned, the storekeeper, JE, and SDO failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, raising suspicions of foul play.
Further investigations revealed that at the time of transportation, CCTV cameras were non-functional, and the weighing scale was also out of order, making it impossible to track the exact quantity and weight of the dispatched material. As scrutiny intensified, the names of key suspects began to emerge.
Upon learning about the scam on January 30, BBMB’s Chief Engineer ordered an immediate probe. After preliminary inquiries, the JE and storekeeper were suspended, while a formal request was sent to the BBMB management for the suspension of the SDO. The Executive Engineer (Mechanical) was directed to report the matter to the police.
BBMB Chief Engineer transferred
In the aftermath of the scam, BBMB’s Chief Engineer (Punjab Cadre) CP Singh has been transferred to Himachal Pradesh. In his place, Suresh Kumar Yadav (Haryana Cadre) has been appointed as the new Chief Engineer of Bhakra Dam, BBMB, Nangal.
Confirming the receipt of a formal complaint, SHO Rahul Sharma stated that a detailed investigation is in progress, and all culprits will soon be brought to justice.
