Centre withdraws notification dissolving Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University

PTC News Desk: Amid massive backlash from the student bodies, the Centre has withdrawn the notification stating dissolution of Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University.

The development comes in the wake of intense protests by students, opposition parties, and farmer unions.

The notification stated, "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1), read with sub-section (2) and (3), of section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966 (31 of 1966), the Central Government hereby rescinds the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, number S.O. 4933 (E), dated the 28th October, 2025, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii), dated the 30th October, 2025."

This means that the Centre's previous decision related to the governance and structure of Panjab University now stands cancelled. The latest notification was issued by Rina Sanowal Kouli, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education.

In a notification released earlier, the Centre had  dissolved the 59-year-old Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh and approved a complete restructuring of the two highest governing bodies. The latest reforms marks the end of Syndicate's elected status and transforms it into a complete nominated entity.

Meanwhile, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had condemned the dissolution of the Senate while calling it an insult to the federal structure of the country.
