Chandigarh, January 9: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday wrote to Chief Secretary over FIR against public servants and sought an action report by Tuesday, January 10.

In the letter, the Chief Minister said that FIR registered at P.S. VB (FS-1), Mohali "against various public servants for which mandatory prior approval of enquiry under Section 17 A of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has not been taken, as required under law."

Further, on the matter, CM Bhagwant Mann instructed the Chief Secretary to immediately check the status as to whether requisite prior approval has been taken or not in the instant case. "If not, then immediate consequential action as warranted under the law may be ensured," the letter added.

Chief Secretary has also been instructed to call the relevant office record of the Vigilance Bureau wherein the decision to register the FIR was taken/ approved and a proper report may be submitted in this regard, according to the letter.

The letter also added that the Chief Secretary "may also issue suitable directions to Vigilance Bureau not to violate the provisions, as mandated under the law, in future. A well-defined Standard Operation Procedure may also be issued forthwith."

Notably, earlier in the day, the Punjab Chief Minister met with Punjab Civil Services (PCS) officers. The meeting with over 70 PCS officers lasted about an hour and a half.

The development comes after Punjab Civil Service officers went on mass leave against the ‘illegal’ arrest of a colleague by the state vigilance bureau.
