Day after assassination bid, Sukhbir Singh Badal performs ‘sewa’ at Takht Kesgarh Sahib
PTC Web Desk: Sukhbir Singh Badal, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, performed ‘sewadar’ duties outside Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Punjab's Rupnagar district under heavy security on Thursday. This comes a day after he narrowly survived an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Clad in a blue ‘sewadar’ uniform and holding a spear, Sukhbir Singh Badal sat at the entrance of the Anandpur Sahib shrine, fulfilling a religious punishment imposed by the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal authority of Sikhs. The directive requires him to serve as a 'sewadar' at Takht Damdama Sahib, Darbar Sahib in Muktsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, and the Golden Temple, for two days each. The punishment pertains to “mistakes” made by the Shiromani Akali Dal and its government between 2007 and 2017.
On Wednesday, during his service at the Golden Temple, he was attacked by Narain Singh Chaura, a former Khalistani terrorist involved in the 2004 Burail jailbreak and wanted in several terror cases. Chaura fired at close range but missed, and plainclothes policemen subdued him immediately.
Ahead of Sukhbir Singh Badal's visit to Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Rupnagar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana assured robust security measures, including the deployment of plainclothes officials and constant surveillance. Several SAD leaders and workers accompanied Sukhbir Singh Badal at the gurdwara.
