Election Commission revokes suspension of Tarn Taran SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal

PTC Web Desk: The Election Commission of India (EC) has revoked the suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravjot Kaur Grewal. The decision comes  nearly two months after she was placed under suspension for alleged lapses during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct during the Tarn Taran bypoll.

The decision follows a proposal submitted by the Punjab Home Department on December 29, recommending the withdrawal of the suspension. Acting on the proposal, the EC approved the revocation with immediate effect, though it declined to grant retrospective reinstatement.

Ravjot Grewal was suspended on November 8 in connection with the Tarn Taran Assembly byelection held on November 11. The action came after the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) filed nine complaints alleging misuse of police machinery, registration of fake FIRs and the arrest of Akali workers on what the party described as fabricated charges.

In a communication to Punjab’s Additional Chief Secretary (Home), the Election Commission stated that any final decision regarding departmental proceedings against the officer would be taken only with the Commission’s concurrence.

The EC had earlier sought a copy of Ravjot Grewal’s chargesheet on December 8, which was submitted by the state government two days later. As part of the review process, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav was summoned to New Delhi on November 25, where he reportedly presented the police department’s position.

Notably, a probe conducted by then Ferozepur Range Deputy Inspector General Harmanbir Singh Gill had reportedly exonerated the Tarn Taran police of allegations related to political misuse of authority. The findings were among the factors considered by the Election Commission while arriving at its decision.
