Former Punjab IG Amar Singh Chahal out of danger, says hospital; two accused who duped him of Rs 8.5 cr identified

PTC News Desk: Former Punjab IG Amar Singh Chahal, who allegedly shot himself in a suicide attempt, is out of danger and recovering, said Park Hospital on Wednesday. In a statement released by the hospital, it was stated that a team of doctors at the hospital successfully saved the life of Chahal, who was brought to the emergency department with a self-inflicted gunshot injury to the chest.


“Post-operatively, the patient was kept on ventilator support in the CTVS ICU for two days, after which he was successfully extubated. At present, the patient is stable, off ventilator support, and is taking a soft diet. Doctors expect complete recovery within about one week,” Col Rajul Sharma, chief executive officer, Park Hospital, Patiala, said.

“His life was saved by a multidisciplinary medical team led by cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon (CTVS) Dr Sidharth Garg, with critical anaesthesia management by Dr Arjun Pratap Joshi and surgical support from Dr Gurjot Singh. The complex emergency surgery, which lasted nearly 3–4 hours, involved repair of the torn lung and stabilisation of chest wall fractures,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Punjab police have identified two suspects in connection with cyber fraud case linked to former Punjab Inspector General of Police Amar Singh Chahal, who was allegedly cheated of ₹8 crore. One suspect is said to be a resident of Patiala, while the other is from Mumbai. Based on evidence recovered from Chahal’s mobile phone, the police have also questioned individuals associated with a WhatsApp group that included several IPS officers and retired senior officials.

Amar Singh Chahal, former Punjab Inspector General allegedly shot himself at his residence in Patiala on Monday. A 12-page suicide was also recovered from the scene in which he cited financial distress caused by an online fraud.
