Free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh as Punjab govt launches health insurance scheme, effective September 23

PTC News Desk: The Punjab government is all set to launch universal health insurance starting September 23 to ensure free health treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh per family.


The scheme, as a pilot will be first rolled out in Tarn Taran and Barnala districts where 128 camps each will be organised. 

“People will have to come here with the copies of their voter id card, AADHAR card and passports, submit them along with the registration form, to be eligible for getting the free health insurance. Sehat cards will be issued to them,” said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The chief minister said that the registration process will be completed within 10 to 15 days following which the scheme will be implemented across the state. As part of the scheme, every family will be provided a health insurance card through which the members will be able to avail free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh.

 “In a year, irrespective of number of people in the family seeking treatment, each family can get treatment for ,2000 ailments, for up to Rs 10 lakh for free,” said CM Mann.

Mann also announced that they were scaling up the number of Aam Aadmi clinics from the present 881 to 1,000.

The chief minister further said that in order to ensure timely treatment for the flood-affected victims, special health camps will be established. Number of Aam Aadmi Clinics will also be increased to 1,000. Earlier only 30 per cent of the medicines were available at these clinics, however now all the medicines will be available free of cost.
