Golden Temple receives third bomb threat in three days, security beefed up

PTC News Desk: The management at Golden Temple has received a third bomb threat via e-mail. The message reportedly threatened of a possible bomb attack. The fresh threat, similar in content to the previous one referencing RDX sparked concerns amongst the authorities and the devotees.

This is the third time that a threatening message has been issued in three days.

In response to the constant threats, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has heightened security on the Golden Temple premises. Bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs have been deployed at the site to conduct intensive checks.

Taking stock of the situation, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said, "The management has received three  threatening e-mails in last three days and information of which has already been given to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla has also been made aware of the development however no appropriate action has been taken from either of the party. "

"There is a conspiracy being suspected behind the threatening messages in order to reduce the number of devotees, " he added further.

Dhami further demanded swift action by the agencies against the perpetrators.

Both the SGPC and Amritsar police are on high alert.

The exact content of the message has not been disclosed yet owing to security concerns.

The police personnel along with paramilitary forces have been deployed around the Golden Temple complex with strict vigilance over every individual entering or exiting the area.

Earlier, SGPC secretary Pratap Singh said that "some mischievous elements" are behind the threats, aiming to disturb peace and spread fear among devotees. "Those who send such threats do not belong to any religion. They speak of targeting all religious places, not just the Golden Temple. Their goal is to create panic," he said.

Meanwhile Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that a breakthrough is expected soon. "We are close to solving the case," he said.

The security in and around the Golden Temple complex along with other religious sites have been beefed up. Both police and intelligence agencies are on high alert.
