Ludhiana: Woman clung to outside of auto for half a km as three armed men tried to loot her; two suspects caught | Watch
PTC Web Desk: A woman narrowly escaped a robbery attempt on a highway in Ludhiana after three miscreants in an auto-rickshaw tried to loot her. The assailants tied her hands with a scarf and threatened her with sharp-edged weapons, but she bravely resisted. For nearly half a km, she hung outside the moving auto to save herself.
Due to lax police patrolling, such incidents on highways involving women have been on the rise. During the struggle, the woman repeatedly avoided falling off the vehicle. Other motorists attempted to help her, but the auto driver continued speeding. After a short distance, the auto lost control and overturned. While one of the robbers managed to flee, locals caught the other two.
The victim, Meena Kumar, said she had hired the auto from Jalandhar Bypass to catch a bus from Phillaur to Nawanshahr. During the ride, one of the men asked to stop the auto under the pretext of using the washroom. When he returned, the trio pushed her aside and sat in the middle. A few minutes later, when Meena asked the driver to stop, the men refused and restrained her.
The attackers attempted to tie her hands with her scarf while brandishing weapons, but she resisted and clung to the side of the moving auto, calling for help. A motorist driving behind recorded the entire incident on video. Another car driver tried to intercept the auto, but the robbers rammed into his car, damaging two vehicles in the process.
The police termed the incident "deeply unfortunate" and confirmed that two suspects had been handed over to the police by locals. He said they would be produced in court for remand to help trace the third accomplice.
