Ontario police officer Tarun Bali, originally from Punjab's Nangal, killed in line of duty in Canada
PTC Web Desk: Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) constable Tarun Bali, originally from Nangal in Punjab, died after sustaining critical injuries while on duty in Ontario, Canada.
Tarun Bali was the younger son of Ashok Bali and Neena Bali, residents of Shivalik Avenue in Naya Nangal. The family had migrated to Toronto several years ago. Bali had joined the Ontario Provincial Police around two-and-a-half years ago and was serving with the Dufferin Detachment. He was recently assigned to special duty with the James Bay Detachment.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the incident occurred at around 12:30 pm on Tuesday near Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 in the Hearst area of Ontario. A police team was conducting an investigation when constable Bali suffered serious injuries during the operation.
He was immediately rushed to hospital, where medical teams made efforts to save his life. However, he later succumbed to his injuries. Another officer involved in the incident was also seriously injured and remains under medical care.
Tarun Bali had married Komal, a woman of Punjabi origin living in Canada, nearly two years ago. News of his death spread quickly among relatives and residents of Naya Nangal's Shivalik Avenue, where a wave of grief swept through the community.
The police have taken an 18-year-old man into custody in connection with the case. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, who had allegedly fled from a hospital, struck constable Bali with a vehicle, causing the fatal injuries. Authorities have charged the accused with first-degree murder.
The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are also assisting with the probe.
Sources said constable Bali's body will be transported to the Chief Coroner's Office in Toronto for a post-mortem examination and further investigation. As a mark of respect, a special procession of emergency vehicles will accompany his body during the nearly 10-hour journey to Toronto.
Constable Bali's death has been widely mourned by members of the Indo-Canadian community and residents of his hometown in Punjab, who have remembered him as a dedicated officer who lost his life while serving the public.
