Patiala: Second major power failure at Rajindra Hospital within two weeks; docs treat patients under mobile torchlights

PTC Web Desk: The Rajindra Hospital in Patiala has once again made headlines after a power outage lasting 10–15 minutes caused severe inconvenience to patients and hospital staff. The electricity failure, attributed to technical issues, raised serious concerns about the reliability of essential services in one of Punjab’s largest government hospitals.

Shocking visuals from the hospital showed wards and corridors engulfed in darkness, with patients using mobile phone flashlights to navigate. In some cases, doctors had to continue treatments under mobile torchlights.

This incident marks the second major power failure at Rajindra Hospital within two weeks. Last month, near Republic Day (January 26), a similar outage occurred while doctors were performing surgery, causing ventilators to stop working. Frustrated hospital staff recorded the incident and shared it on social media, exposing serious lapses in Punjab’s healthcare infrastructure.

Gurdaspur Civil Hospital also hit by power cut

The crisis is not limited to Patiala. On January 26, Gurdaspur Civil Hospital also suffered a prolonged power outage lasting over an hour. The disruption left newborns exposed to cold as essential medical equipment, including incubators and ventilators, stopped functioning. The operation theater also plunged into darkness, causing delays in critical procedures.

The repeated power failures in Punjab’s hospitals raise concerns about the government’s healthcare infrastructure and its ability to provide uninterrupted medical services. Patients and staff are demanding urgent action to prevent further disruptions in essential healthcare facilities.
