Punjab: Bag containing IED recovered from bag shop in Ludhiana, 2 held

According to the shop owner, an unknown man came to buy a suitcase. He gave the shop owner Rs 500 in advance and said he would return shortly to pick it up. However, he left behind the bag he was carrying in the shop.

Punjab: Bag containing IED recovered from bag shop in Ludhiana, 2 held

PTC News Desk: A suspicious bag containing an improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered from a bag shop in the Basti Jodhewal area of Ludhiana. Police had been examining the bag since Wednesday night and confirmed on Thursday afternoon that it contained explosives.


According to the shop owner, an unknown man came to buy a suitcase. He gave the shop owner Rs 500 in advance and said he would return shortly to pick it up. However, he left behind the bag he was carrying in the shop.

However, the shop owner immediately informed the building owner after he detected a foul petrol-like smell eminating from the bag, who then informed the police about the suspicious bag

Police reached the spot and launched investigation into the matter. Considering sensitivity of the situation, Commissioner Swapan Sharma was informed about the case. Shortly afterward, the bomb disposal team reached the spot and took the bag in its custody.  

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the case. During the interrogation, they admitted to learning how to make bombs from YouTube. They confessed that due to a personal grudge with the shopkeeper, they planted the explosive in his shop.

The bag contained about 5–6 liters of petrol, a battery, some wires, and a dialer.

Dareesi SHO Gurmeet Singh said the bag contained some old timepieces, wires, and a packet of petrol. There was no real threat. The bag was seized and the case is under investigation. Two people have been arrested.

According to the SHO, both accused originally hail from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh. They had been staying with a relative in Ludhiana while working there. 

The police officials are further questioning them to gather complete details.
