Punjab launches crackdown on begging racket, orders DNA tests for children on streets
PTC Web Desk: In a decisive move to tackle the growing menace of child exploitation through begging, the Punjab Government has ordered a state-wide crackdown on beggars using children to solicit alms. Acting swiftly on the government’s directive, the Amritsar administration took several beggars and children into custody on Thursday from the city’s Golden Gate area. A similar exercise was conducted at CP 67 lights in Mohali.
During the operation, police and administrative teams specifically targeted those found begging with small children. The authorities suspect that many of these children might not be related to the adults accompanying them, raising serious concerns about child trafficking and forced labour. To verify the authenticity of their relationship, DNA tests will be conducted on suspected cases.
The Punjab Government has issued strict orders to all Deputy Commissioners across the state to conduct DNA testing of children seen begging under suspicious circumstances. Officials believe many of these minors may be victims of trafficking or illegal labour and are being exploited by individuals posing as their parents or guardians.
To monitor and execute the campaign effectively, the state has formed 81 specialised surveillance teams focused on hotspots across eight districts. The initiative is being carried out jointly by the Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development, and Punjab Police. The DNA test results will determine whether there is a biological relationship between the child and the adult accompanying them. Any discrepancies will lead to strict legal action against the accused.
