Punjab govt to offer cheaper night-time power tariff for industries
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Government has announced a discounted power tariff for industries operating during night hours. According to a government spokesperson, electricity rates will be reduced by Re 1 per unit for industries running between 10 pm and 6 am. The order will be effective from October 16 until March 1, coinciding with the winter season when overall power consumption remains relatively low. The decision was approved by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC).

The initiative is expected to benefit industries operating in major cities such as Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, and Mohali, where factories and production units function in multiple shifts, including at night. Officials believe the move will not only lower production costs but also encourage industrial expansion.
The Punjab Government has also purchased a private coal-based thermal power plant at Goindwal to strengthen power supply. Additionally, surplus electricity generated during the night is being sold to other states, including metropolitan hubs like Mumbai.
The government has highlighted that Punjab is steadily attracting investment from companies outside the state. To facilitate industrial growth, the government has simplified regulations, ensuring that investors can now secure all necessary clearances through a single-window system within 18 days.
The new Industries Minister has constituted 24 expert committees across different sectors to prepare Punjab’s upcoming industrial policy. The Chief Minister has also held consultations with industry leaders in Delhi and other states to incorporate their recommendations.
