Punjab shocker: Mohali family of three found dead in SUV near Rajpura, police suspect depression-linked murder-suicide
PTC Web Desk: In a deeply disturbing incident, a family of three was found dead in a parked Fortuner SUV in a field off the Banur-Tepla road near village Changera, under the Rajpura subdivision of Punjab. The deceased have been identified as Sandeep Singh (45), his wife Mandeep Kaur (42), and their son Abhay (15)—all residents of Sector 109, Mohali.
Local villagers who had arrived in the fields to install a tubewell on Sunday noticed the stationary SUV in a secluded area and alerted the police after spotting bodies inside. The Banur police reached the scene and sealed off the area. All three victims had suffered gunshot wounds to the head.
According to DSP Manjit Singh, preliminary investigations suggest the case is a murder-suicide, with strong indications that Sandeep Singh shot his wife and son before killing himself. A pistol was found in his hand, and all three victims had bullet wounds to the head. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, but investigators are not ruling out any angle as the probe continues.
Police sources also revealed that Sandeep was reportedly battling depression, potentially linked to ongoing medical treatment for his son, Abhay. Forensic officials have recovered digital evidence suggesting frequent communication with doctors, possibly regarding the child’s health.
Due to the absence of a forensic team at Rajpura Civil Hospital, the post-mortem is being conducted at Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, under a forensic board. SHO Akashdeep Singh of Banur confirmed this development, as did SMO Sonia Jagwal of Rajpura hospital. The police are also planning to search the family’s Mohali residence for further clues.
The deceased head of the family, Sandeep Singh, was originally from village Sikhwala in Bathinda district and had lived in Gurugram for several years before relocating to Mohali around three years ago. He was involved in the property dealing business and was considered financially well-off.
However, the police noted that the family had minimal interaction with relatives and neighbours in their housing society. According to investigating officers, this social isolation, combined with possible mental health concerns, could have contributed to the tragic outcome.
Relatives of the deceased expressed shock and disbelief. Sandeep’s brother currently lives in Bathinda, while his sister is based in the United States.
The police are currently collecting statements from relatives and planning a thorough investigation to understand the motive behind this tragic triple death.
