Punjab: PUNBUS, PRTC contract workers' union announce 'chakka jam' today from 12 pm to 2 pm

PTC News Desk: In a significant development for bus travelers across Punjab, Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, and PRTC Contract Workers’ Unions have announced a chakka jam (road blockade) today from 12 pm to 2 pm. The unions have announced protests will be held outside Punjab’s bus depots and bus stands.

The development comes ahead of the tenders that are set to open today for the introduction of new buses under the “kilometre scheme.”

To protest against the scheme, the contract workers’ unions will hold demonstrations today from 12 to 2 p.m., after which the national highways will be blocked. They have warned if the government fails to meet their demands, Punjab Roadways employees will completely halt all bus services after 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Union members said several meetings have been held with the government, but each time the government backs out of its agreed commitments. The PUNBUS employees have now announced an intensified struggle.

According to them, bringing private buses under the government’s kilometre scheme will push the department toward closure. They also pointed out that the government is already struggling to pay salaries — employees have to stage protests every time just to receive their wages.
