Punjab weather: Rain alert issued in Punjab; govt changes school timings
PTC Web Desk: Due to the impact of an active Western Disturbance, Punjab continues to experience weather changes, with a rain alert issued for several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed nine districts under orange alert and nine others under a yellow alert for rain on Friday.
In response to the weather conditions, the Punjab Government has also announced changes in school timings, which will take effect from March 1. Meanwhile, the recent rainfall has led to a 5.7°C drop in the state’s average maximum temperature, which now stands 2.6°C below normal levels. The highest recorded temperature in the state was 23.2°C in Abohar.
The IMD has issued orange alert for heavy rain in the following districts: Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Rupnagar.
Yellow alert has been issued for Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Patiala, and Fatehgarh Sahib.
The Punjab Government has also revised school hours due to changing weather conditions. From March 1, new timings will be: primary schools: 8.30 am to 2.30 pm; middle and high schools: 8.30 am to 2.50 pm.
Currently, primary schools operate from 9 am to 3 pm while middle and high schools run from 9 am to 3. 20 pm.
Punjab’s maximum temperature remains 4–5°C below normal, with no significant rise expected today. A slight increase of 3–4°C is likely within the next 24 hours. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain stable. No further weather alerts have been issued beyond today, but light rain is expected on March 1 and March 3 in some areas.
