Chandigarh, December 22: Taking cognizance of dense fog in the state, Punjab Government on Thursday issued fresh orders regarding school timings in the state. In a Twitter post on Tuesday, CM Bhagwant Mann said, "Due to dense fog in the state, all state-aided, private, recognized schools will open at 10 Am from 21-12-2022 to 21-01-2023 in view of the health and safety of school students and teachers."

Due to low temperature, high humidity and steady winds, dense to very dense fog has persisted over Punjab, Haryana, northwest Rajasthan, west and east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. An IMD official said, "The satellite images showed a thick layer of fog from Punjab and northwest Rajasthan to Bihar."

Visibility at 5.30 am was zero in Bathinda, 25 meters in Ganganagar, Chandigarh, Gorakhpur and Bareilly and 50 meters in Amritsar, Churu, Bahraich and Ambala. The Safdarjung Observatory in Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 21 degree Celsius. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 21.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest so far this season. In the next few days, the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to drop to five degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Every year in the month of December-January, fog is a common quandary in the North-Indian region and about 60 percent of the days remain foggy. Recent studies on fog in India have highlighted significant socioeconomic concerns due to increase in frequency, persistence and intensity of fog in the northern parts of the country.
