Punjab: Zirakpur businessman faces extortion threat; former business partners charged in the case

Punjab Extortion Case: Spike in threat calls in India gives rise to threat landscape. Tensions, chaos and scare gripped Zirakpur as similar extortion and threat call incident from Zirakpur came to limelight. 

Zirakpur-based businessman and celebrity Tanish Bhat who runs cafes in Panchkula received a threat call in February 2023 from an international number on WhatsApp threatening him against going to the café, stating Bhat that caller belongs to a renowned gangster group. 


A month after the threat call, businessman Tanish Bhat was blocked by two unidentified bikers on the gunpoint and demanded Rs 40 lakh extortion money. 

On the complaint of Tanish Bhat, firstly Punjab Police registered FIR on the unknown persons in the case, but after six months of proper investigation, police collected some evidences, multiple witnesses, proofs, and leads and nominated 4 people in the case. The four persons has been identified as Karan Singla, Shubham Gupta, Vinay Kumar and Rohit Kumar. 

Nominated Suspects Names with Address and Mobile Nos: 

1) Karan Singla S/o Raj Kumar R/o Bareta Mansa Punjab 

2) Rohit Kumar S/o Ashok Kumar, Sector 27D, Chandigarh, 

3) Shubham Gupta S/o Yash Bhushan Gupta R/o Ahemadgarh, Sangrur,

4) Vinay Kumar S/o Mulkh Raj R/O Maya Garden City, Zirakpur, SAS Nagar Punjab

As the investigation intensifies, all four persons have been identified as old business partners of Tanish Bhat. 

Out of four accused, Rohit Kumar was arrested by Punjab Police on November 21, 2023 and presented before the court of law and has been sent for police remand for four days, remaining 3 persons are still absconding.

Meanwhile, police registered case against four persons under Sections 384 (extortion), Arms Act 25/54/59, 341 (wrongful restraint), Section 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant Sections of the 84 c IT Act at Zirakpur police station.

The probe was initially conducted by Zirakpur station house officer following which the case was registered on the directions of Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) on the basis of the report submitted by the former.
