SGPC chief Advocate Dhami puts to rest speculations over removal of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar

Amritsar: Amid speculation over the removal of Sri Akal Takht Sahib officiating Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami made it clear that no such issue was on the agenda of the interim committee meeting and it was a routine gathering.

He said the issue of an increase in sacrilege incidents came up for discussion. It was decided to increase day as well as night vigil at all gurdwaras. The SGPC expressed displeasure at "neglect" of governments towards these incidents. The interim committee has urged the Central as well as state governments to make strict laws in this regard.

The SGPC also condemned the government's alleged inaction in derogatory posts on social media against the Sikhism.

Earlier before the beginning of the meeting, the committee members recited 'Mool Mantra' for five times to pay their last respects to former Punjab CM late Sardar Parkash Singh  Badal.

Notably, amid a controversy over Sri Akal Takht Sahib officiating Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh’s attending AAP MP Raghav Chadha and actor Parineeti Chopra’s engagement ceremony, there were speculations with regard to the replacement of the Jathedar.

It was being speculated that the SGPC might take a call on the demand raised by various Sikh organisations to formulate norms for the Jathedars of Takhts, including their appointment, powers, principles and removal.
