SKM announces protest against Punjab Government from March 5 in Chandigarh

PTC Web Desk: The SKM has announced a large-scale protest against the Punjab Government scheduled to begin on March 5 in Chandigarh. Farmers from across the state will march towards the city on March 4 to press for their demands.

On Saturday, SKM leaders held a crucial meeting at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh, where they finalised their strategy. According to farmer leaders, the protest will focus on several key issues and is expected to last for a week. Discussions are ongoing with the Chandigarh police regarding the designated protest site.

SKM leaders demand that the Punjab Government withdraw recent amendments in water conservation regulations. They are urging the Punjab Government to reject the Central Government's policies affecting Punjabi language and introduce a resolution in the Vidhan Sabha to safeguard it. Farmers are calling for an independent state education policy, tailored to Punjab’s needs, including syllabus reforms to better serve local students.

SKM leaders accused the Punjab Government of failing to fulfill promises made to farmers. While the state government had earlier sought farmers’ inputs on agricultural policy, the final implementation has not reflected these recommendations. Additionally, they raised concerns over financial losses suffered by paddy farmers due to price cuts, despite Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's earlier assurances regarding PR-126 paddy variety.

The meeting also addressed allegations against BKU (Toteval) President Sukh Gill, who faces accusations from a deported NRI youth. The SKM has decided to suspend him and has formed a three-member committee, comprising Harjinder Singh Tanda, Ruldu Singh Mansa, and Prem Singh Bhangu, to investigate the matter. The committee will submit its report within a month.
