Zirakpur train accident: Two children killed while flying kites near railway track

PTC Web Desk: In a tragic incident, two minor boys lost their lives after being struck by a passenger train near the Baltana railway crossing in Zirakpur on Sunday evening. The accident occurred close to Harmilap Nagar colony at around 6 pm

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the victims were identified as Shivam (14) and Aarush Kumar (10). The children were reportedly chasing and collecting kites near the railway track when they failed to notice an approaching passenger train from behind and were fatally hit on the spot.

Aarush was a Class 4 student, while Shivam, a Class 6 student, was a resident of Abhaypur village. Eyewitnesses said the boys were playing dangerously close to the track, leaving them little chance to escape once the train approached at high speed.

Following the incident, GRP personnel reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination, and the families of the victims were informed.

Local residents said the railway track passing through Harmilap Nagar and the Baltana gate cuts across a densely populated residential area. Due to the open surroundings on both sides of the track, children and pedestrians frequently cross or linger near the railway line.

Residents said during the kite-flying season, the risk multiplies as children often gather close to the tracks to retrieve kites, making accidents more likely.
