K Annamalai tenders resignation to BJP chief Nitin Nabin, likely to launch new party
PTC News Desk: Former Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai Tuesday tendered his resignation from the party during his meeting with BJP national president Nitin Nabin. He is expected to meet Amit Shah at 4 pm.
The resignation follows intense speculation that Annamalai , who was replaced as Tamil Nadu BJP chief by Nainar Nagendran, no longer sees himself playing significant role in the BJP with reports suggesting that he is most likely will launch his own party.
In a significant political development, K. Annamalai reportedly submitted a five-page resignation letter during a key meeting with Nitin Nabin and BJP national organisation secretary B. L. Santhosh. Sources said Annamalai expressed his desire to leave the party on amicable terms, telling the leadership that he now wanted to “chart his own course.”
Despite his reported decision, the BJP leadership is said to be making efforts to persuade the former IPS officer to remain in the party. Sources indicated that a national-level role is being considered for him, and he had earlier been asked not to leave Delhi until further instructions.
If Annamalai ultimately exits the BJP, it could trigger a major political shake-up in Tamil Nadu, particularly at a time when actor-turned-politician Vijay has rapidly emerged as a significant political force in the state.
According to sources close to Annamalai, he believes Tamil Nadu's political landscape has changed dramatically with Vijay's rise. One source familiar with the discussions claimed that Annamalai feels there is currently no leader capable of directly challenging Vijay and that traditional Dravidian-era politics, particularly those centred solely on language issues, may no longer resonate with voters as they once did.
Amid speculation about his future, supporters of Annamalai reportedly put up posters in Madurai urging him to take his “next avatar” and “save Tamil Nadu,” further fuelling discussions about his next political move.
