Patiala, May 10: Patiala Additional District Magistrate Gurpreet Singh Thind, while exercising his powers under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 (Act No. 2 of 1974), has issued orders barring the general public from bathing and swimming in canals. The Additional District Magistrate said legal action would be taken against those violating these orders. Patiala Additional District Magistrate Gurpreet Singh Thind said due to hot weather, students of schools and colleges and general public, including children and youth, often go for bathing in the Bhakra and other canals of the district. To avoid any untoward incident, bathing in canals falling within the limits of Patiala district had been completely banned, he added.  The order shall remain in force till July 8. Notably, two children, identified as Pardeep Billu (14) and Lakhbir Singh (16), drowned in the Bhakra canal near Punjab's Rajpura late Monday evening. The bodies were fished out on Tuesday. When Pardeep Billu took a dip into the Bhakra canal, he started drowning. Lakhbir Singh, too, jumped into the canal to rescue Billu. However, he too drowned. Their bodies were fished out by divers on Tuesday. Further investigations are on.
