Mohali, January 31: With only a few days left for the Punjab Assembly elections 2022, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia may withdraw his candidature from the Majitha constituency. As per available information, Bikram Singh Majithia's wife Ganieve, who is his covering candidate, also filed papers her papers from Majitha. Earlier, SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia had filed his nomination papers from two seats — Majitha and Amritsar East  for the upcoming Punjab assembly elections scheduled to be conducted on February 20. There are reports Majithia will now be contesting from Amritsar East constituency only against Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu. Also read | Ahead of Union Budget 2022, Sensex surges 814 points on broad-based rally Earlier, Navjot Singh Sidhu had “challenged” the SAD leader to leave the Majitha constituency and contest the elections only from Amritsar East. However, Bikram Majithia responded to Navjot Sidhu’s ‘dare’ by saying he does not take his opponent seriously. “The Election Commission has given me the freedom to contest from other constituencies,” he was quoted as saying. Earlier in the day, while observing that the elections in Punjab will be held on February 20, the Supreme Court on Monday granted protection from arrest to SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia till February 23 in the drug case. A Bench of Chief Justice of India Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana and Justices AS Bopanna and Hima Kohli asked Majithia to surrender before the trial court concerned on February 23 and apply for regular bail. It also asked senior advocate P Chidambaram appearing for the Punjab Government to advise the state that such cases are not filed before the elections.
