Punjab farmer dies of heart attack after wheat crop destroyed Mohinder Singh, a farmer of Chanarthal village, died due to a heart attack here on Saturday after his standing wheat crop on 14 acres was destroyed in fire last week. Mohinder was 82 years old. Crops on thousands of acres in nine villages, including Chanarthal was destroyed in fire. On Punjab CM’s directions, a team visited the affected villages. They had assured the farmers of compensation. The deceased’s son Surjit Singh said the compensation had not come so far. He said his father went into depression on learning that their crop had gutted and stopped eating anything as he was worried over the family’s survival. He said they were three brothers and had jointly taken 14 acres on lease. Though villagers extended them aid by providing wheat besides husk for livestock, they won’t be able to pay the lease money and meet household expenses. He demanded that the government should immediately give them the promised compensation. Nagra expressed grief over the death and assured all help to the family. -PTC News
