Kunwar Vijay Pratap resigns as AAP MLA in big blow to party; third departure in two days
PTC News Desk: In another setback to the Aam Aadmi Party, Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has resigned from the Punjab Legislative Assembly with immediate effect. The former IPS officer took to social media and announced his decision.
While addressing his constituents, he claimed that he had achieved 90 per cent of the targets he had set as a legislator.
“My biggest achievement is that I ended the Mai Baap culture in politics and worked by considering the public as my source of inspiration,” he said.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap said his future political work would focus on clean politics and transparent administration. “My only goal is ‘Punjab First’. I will have no personal interests beyond that,” he said.
He has submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, becoming the third AAP legislator to resign in less than 24 hours.
His resignation came a day after Samana MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Sanaur MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra quit the party’s primary membership. Both are expected to join the BJP on Monday.
The resignations follow AAP’s announcement of its first list of candidates for the 2027 Assembly elections on November 1. The party had recently appointed constituency in-charges in the seats represented by Jouramajra and Pathanmajra, prompting speculation that the sitting MLAs might not receive tickets again.
AAP leaders had earlier accused the BJP of trying to expand its presence in Punjab by bringing in leaders rejected by other parties. They maintained that the BJP had little political support in the state.
Kunwar, a former IPS officer, joined AAP after leaving the police service. He was involved in investigations into the 2015 sacrilege incidents in Faridkot and the related police firing cases in Punjab.
He entered electoral politics with AAP and won the Amritsar North Assembly seat in 2022. His relationship with the party leadership later worsened as he publicly criticised its functioning and handling of the sacrilege cases. The differences eventually led to his suspension from the party.
