BCCI to lodge protest at ICC meeting after Asia Cup Trophy taken by ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi
PTC Web Desk: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that it will lodge a strong protest at the upcoming ICC meeting in November after Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi reportedly took the Asia Cup trophy following India’s refusal to accept it in Dubai.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia explained the decision, stating that India could not accept the trophy from Naqvi, who is also the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the country’s Interior Minister. “We have taken a decision not to accept the trophy, but that does not allow him to take away the trophy and medals to his hotel,” Saikia said, describing the act as “unexpected and childish.”
India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final, with Tilak Varma scoring an unbeaten 69 to earn the Player of the Match award. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia praised the Indian team’s consistent performance throughout the tournament. “India won all seven group-stage matches, the matches in the second group stage, and finally the final against Pakistan. This is a big achievement for Indian cricket,” he said.
Addressing criticism over India’s participation in a tournament featuring Pakistan amid heightened tensions after the Pahalgam Terror Attack, Saikia emphasised that the BCCI followed government policy. “For bilateral tournaments, India does not play against hostile countries, as has been the practice for the past 12-15 years. However, in multinational tournaments like the Asia Cup, Indian teams are required to participate to avoid sanctions from international federations,” he explained.
Saikia added that India’s 3-0 series win over Pakistan brings pride and joy to the nation. “With this convincing victory, we have made our people proud and brought happiness to cricket fans across the country,” he said.
