ICC corrects ranking error, confirms Virat Kohli spent 1,547 days as World No.1 ODI batter
PTC Web Desk: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a clarification after correcting an error in its recently released ODI rankings, confirming that Virat Kohli has spent 1,547 days as the world’s No.1 ODI batter, not 825 days as initially stated.
The revised clarification came days after the ICC rankings released on January 14 showed Kohli returning to the top of the ODI batting charts. On Wednesday, the ICC had incorrectly mentioned that Kohli remained at the No.1 position for 825 days. The governing body later acknowledged the mistake and updated the figures on Friday.
With the corrected data, Virat Kohli has now become the third player in ODI history to spend the most time at the top of the rankings. Only West Indies legends Sir Vivian Richards (2,306 days) and Brian Lara (2,079 days) are ahead of him.
Kohli’s return to the No.1 position came after a strong performance against New Zealand, where he scored 93 runs in the first ODI. The innings helped him gain crucial rating points, taking his tally to 785 points.
This marks the first time Virat Kohli has topped the ODI rankings since July 2021, and overall, the 11th occasion in his career. He had entered the latest rankings at No.2 before overtaking teammate Rohit Sharma.
