India vs Australia: ICC fines Ravindra Jadeja 25% of match fees for breaching code of conduct

Nagpur (Maharashtra), February 11: Ravindra Jadeja has been fined 25% of his match fee for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in Nagpur during the first Test against Australia.

Jadeja was found to have violated Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which prohibits players and player support personnel from engaging in conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.

Jadeja's disciplinary record has also been updated with one demerit point. This was his first offence in the previous 24 months.

On Thursday, 9 February, during the 46th over of Australia's first innings, Jadeja was seen applying a soothing cream to his index finger. In the video, the left-arm spinner appears to rub a substance from Mohammed Siraj's palm onto his left hand's index finger.

The Indian team's management explained that the finger spinner was applying the cream to a swelling on his bowling hand's index finger. This was done without asking the on-field umpires for permission.

There was no need for a formal hearing because Jadeja admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

The Match Referee was satisfied that the cream was applied to the finger solely for medical purposes when he decided to sanction the player in addition to the Level 1 sanction he imposed. Because the cream was not applied to the ball as an artificial substance, it did not change the condition of the ball, which would have violated clause 41.3 of the ICC playing conditions - Unfair Play - The Match Ball - Changing its Condition.
