IPL 2025: Will Dhoni play? Chennai Super Kings CEO drops major bombshell
IPL 2025: MS Dhoni's IPL future remains uncertain ahead of the IPL 2025 retention deadline and auction, with the former India captain's decision sparking much speculation.
Though many expected Dhoni to retire from the Chennai Super Kings in 2024, he might still make a comeback at the age of 43 in one final bid to help his beloved IPL team reach the playoffs.
Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently released a message from Dhoni about his retention. He stressed that CSK is interested in retaining him, but Dhoni has not confirmed anything and will let them know by October 31 - the IPL retention date.
"We also want Dhoni to play for CSK. However, Dhoni has not verified anything to us yet. Dhoni stated, 'I will tell you before October 31.' We hope he will play," Kasi Viswanathan told Sports Vikatan, according to India Today.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council reinstated the previous rule, which permitted franchises to register players who had retired from international cricket or had not played in a long period as 'uncapped'.
The rulw allowed all 10 IPL teams to reconsider their retention strategy, although many believe the revisions were made specifically for the famous MS Dhoni, with the Chennai Super Kings being able to retain him as an uncapped player for a small fee of INR 4 crore.
Though CSK maintained that they had not yet discussed the matter with Dhoni, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif is convinced that the IPL rules were amended solely to allow Dhoni to continue playing.
"You will have the opportunity to see MS Dhoni again. He is fit, batting with a strike rate of 200, and keeping well, therefore I assume that rules will change until he wants to play. If he wants to play in the IPL, he will. He is such a big player, such a big match-winner, and has been a leader for CSK," Kaif stated in an interview with Star Sports.
