Mohammed Shami ordered to pay Rs 4 lakh monthly alimony to estranged wife Hasin Jahan
PTC Web Desk: Team India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to pay Rs 4 lakh per month as alimony to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan. As per the order by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, Shami must provide Rs 1.5 lakh every month for Jahan's personal maintenance, and Rs 2.5 lakh for the upbringing and care of their daughter.
This new ruling came after Hasin Jahan challenged a 2018 verdict from the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which had granted her only Rs 50,000 per month for herself and Rs 80,000 for their daughter. Jahan had originally demanded Rs 10 lakh monthly—Rs 7 lakh for herself and Rs 3 lakh for their child—but the lower court had rejected this.
During the appeal, Jahan’s lawyer highlighted that Shami earns a high income and can afford to pay more. As per his 2021 income tax return, Shami earns around Rs 7.19 crore annually, which is nearly Rs 60 lakh per month. Jahan claimed her combined monthly expenses with her daughter are over Rs 6 lakh.
Taking all this into account, the High Court ruled that the revised alimony was justified. Justice Mukherjee said the amounts were “just, fair, and reasonable” to ensure financial stability for both mother and daughter. He also noted that Shami could voluntarily support his daughter's education or future needs if he wishes.
The court questioned why the earlier Alipore Court order had set such a low amount despite Shami’s substantial earnings. It also noted that Jahan has not remarried and lives alone with their daughter.
Shami and Jahan got married in 2014, and their daughter was born in 2015. But their relationship broke down in 2018, when Jahan accused the cricketer of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and even match-fixing. She also claimed he had stopped providing financial support.
In 2023, Shami posted an emotional message on Instagram after meeting his daughter Aaira after a long time. “Time stood still when I saw her again after a long time. Love you more than words can say, Bebo,” he wrote. The post went viral and received over 1.6 lakh likes in just an hour.
However, Jahan dismissed the post, calling it a publicity stunt. She said her daughter met Shami only because she needed his signature to renew her passport. According to her, Shami took the girl to a shopping mall tied to a brand he promotes so he wouldn’t have to spend money.
She also revealed that her daughter had asked for a guitar and a camera, but Shami refused to buy them. “He doesn’t even check on her. A month ago he met her and said nothing, now he posts a photo just for show,” Jahan added.
