Rahul Dravid steps down as head coach of Rajasthan Royals, declines broader role
PTC News Desk: Rajasthan Royals have announced their decision to part ways with head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Dravid’s second stint with the franchise, where he had earlier served as both captain and coach, lasted less than a year after his appointment on September 6, 2024.
The former India skipper, who featured in 46 matches for the Royals during his playing career, had taken charge after completing his tenure with the national team. However, the 2025 IPL campaign fell short of expectations, with Rajasthan securing only four wins in 14 games and finishing ninth on the table, just above Chennai Super Kings on net run rate.
After the T20 World Cup, Dravid was named head coach of the inaugural IPL champions and roped in Vikram Rathour as batting coach, but the side struggled to translate its promise into results. Following a structural review, the Royals offered him a larger role within the franchise, which he declined.
Dravid had first rejoined the Royals in 2023 as head coach after earlier mentoring roles, earning recognition for improving both the team’s performance and its culture.
RR management confirmed the development on Saturday, August 30, stating that Dravid had been offered a broader role but chose not to take it.
"Rahul has been central to the Royals' journey over many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, built strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise. As part of the franchise structural review, Rahul had been offered a broader position at the franchise, but has chosen not to take this," the statement read.
"The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise," it added.
