New Delhi, October 10: Indian opener Shubman Gill, who has been battling dengue, was recently hospitalized in Chennai due to a significant drop in his platelet count. While he has since been discharged, his availability for the highly anticipated World Cup match against Pakistan on October 14 remains uncertain.

Gill, who tested positive for dengue upon his arrival in Chennai last week, has been grappling with the illness for the past week. As a result, he will also miss India's upcoming match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

According to an insider from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), "Shubman Gill was on a drip at the Chennai team hotel for the last couple of days. However, his platelet count dropped to 70,000, and as is often the case with dengue patients, once the count falls below 100,000, hospital admission becomes a precautionary measure. He was admitted for all the necessary tests on Sunday night during India's match against Australia. However, by Monday evening, he was discharged."

Reports suggest that Gill received treatment at Chennai's renowned multi-care specialty hospital, 'Kauvery.' The team's doctor, Rizwan, stayed behind to oversee his recovery process.

Although there are still 96 hours left before the Pakistan match, Gill's health is of utmost importance to the Indian team management. He needs to be in prime condition for this grueling tournament.

Dengue can significantly weaken the body, and even for an athlete, it takes time to regain full physical strength for a tournament as demanding as the World Cup.

Team captain Rohit Sharma expressed his concern for Gill's well-being, prioritizing the young player's recovery over his participation in the upcoming matches. Rohit stated, "I mean, obviously, he is sick. I feel for him. But as a human being first, I want him to get well. It's not about the captain thinking, 'I want Gill to play tomorrow.' No, I want him to get well. He's a young guy with a fit body, so he'll recover quickly."
