Shubman Gill tests positive for dengue, may miss Sunday's World Cup game against Australia
Chennai, October 6: Shubman Gill's participation in India's opening World Cup game against Australia this Sunday is in doubt as he has tested positive for dengue. The Indian team management is closely monitoring Gill's condition, with a decision on his availability pending further tests on Friday.
If Gill is unable to recover in time for the crucial match against Australia, India will need to consider alternatives, possibly choosing between Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul to open the innings alongside captain Rohit Sharma. Gill's absence would be a significant setback for the team, as he has been in exceptional form this year.
Gill's standout performances include a remarkable double century against New Zealand and consistent batting throughout various tournaments. He was the top run-scorer in the Indian Premier League with 890 runs and also led the batting charts in the recent Asia Cup with 302 runs. His recent scores reflect his impressive form, with notable innings of 104, 74, 27*, 121, 19, 58, and 67*.
Leading up to the World Cup, the Indian team has faced uncertainty due to several key players returning from injuries. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer made comebacks after extended breaks. Additionally, spinner Axar Patel sustained an injury during the Asia Cup, resulting in his replacement in the World Cup squad by Ravichandran Ashwin.
