WFI to take charge as Indian Olympic Association dissolves ad-hoc committee for Wrestling

PTC News Desk: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) dissolved the ad-hoc committee appointed to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Monday, stating that the body is no longer required after the lifting of the federation's ban by United World Wrestling (UWW) and the successful completion of selection trials for future competitions.

UWW lifted the WFI ban in February. The UWW placed the WFI on provisional suspension on August 23, last year, after the federation failed to hold an election within the time frame specified following allegations of sexual harassment and protests against ex-president Brij Bhushan Singh by top wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik. Following this, an ad hoc committee was set up to look after WHI's daily functions.

Elections were held in late December, and Sanjay Singh was elected as WFI's new president. However, the wrestlers protested his election, claiming he was an aide to former President Brij Bhushan.

Days after the elections, the Ministry suspended the federation again, following Sanjay's announcement that the U-15 and U-20 national teams would be hosted at Nandini Nagar in Uttar Pradesh's Gond district by the end of the year. Once again, an ad hoc IOA committee was formed to oversee the federation's day-to-day operations.
