86 years on, Mumbai's beloved double-decker buses all set to officially retire from bustling streets

Mumbai, September 15: In the heart of Mumbai, a cherished chapter in the city's history is drawing to a close. After an incredible 86-year journey, Mumbai's beloved non-air-conditioned double-decker BEST buses are embarking on their final voyage, officially 'retiring' from the streets that they've graced for generations. This moment marks the end of an era—a chapter that has been etched into the hearts of Mumbaikars and travellers alike.

As the sun sets on the bustling streets of South Mumbai, the last five non-AC double-decker buses, iconic in their vibrant red livery, are preparing to make their quiet exit. Soon, they will fade into the annals of time, leaving behind a treasure trove of memories that have shaped the lives of those who have journeyed within their historic frames. And, on October 5, a few open-deck double-decker tourist buses, too, will bid their adieu, marking the final farewell to these towering giants.

These non-AC double-decker buses, with their timeless design and vibrant interiors, have been more than just a mode of transportation. They've been the loyal companions of Mumbaikars, faithfully serving the city since their debut in 1937. Born 11 years after BEST bus services were introduced to the city in 1926, these towering giants quickly became an indelible part of Mumbai's fabric. Their towering presence, spacious boarding decks, and panoramic windows made them an unforgettable part of the city's daily life.

A narrow staircase spiraled upwards to the upper deck, where passengers could savor the thrill of elevated views. Meanwhile, the lower deck offered a cozy setting for shorter journeys. On crowded routes, these buses would come alive with the hustle and bustle of commuters jostling for space on the boarding deck, creating a vibrant atmosphere that was uniquely Mumbai.

For many regular commuters, these double-decker buses were more than just a mode of transport; they were an essential part of their daily routine. Passengers would eagerly plan their journeys to coincide with the arrival of these iconic buses. When, on rare occasions, a regular bus would arrive instead, it was met with silent curses and disappointed sighs—a testament to the special place these buses held in the hearts of the people.

Over the years, the number of double-decker buses gradually dwindled—from over 240 in their prime to just five in 2021. Now, as these final five embark on their last journeys, they leave behind a trail of memories, shared laughter, and the echoes of animated conversations that filled their cabins.

The decision to phase out the non-AC double-deckers is part of a broader strategy aimed at replacing buses over 15 years old with a modern, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced fleet. It's a necessary step for the city's environmental, safety, operational, and commercial well-being.

As Mumbai bids farewell to these iconic buses, it's not just the end of an era—it's the closing of a chapter that has played a vital role in shaping the city's identity. However, as these historic buses take their final bow, they leave behind a legacy that will forever be etched into the hearts of Mumbaikars. Their iconic red frames may no longer roam the streets, but their memories will continue to live on, carried forward by the city's undying spirit and the promise of a bright, sustainable future.
