Punjab floods: New breach in Ghaggar raises concerns in Mansa's Sardulgarh, several villages affected

Mansa, July 18: Mansa district in Punjab witnessed a new breach in the Ghaggar river at Sardulgarh, causing alarm among locals as the water threatens to enter Sardulgarh town. With a total of five breaches in the Ghaggar within Mansa district and the river flowing above the danger mark at Chandpura Bundh, the situation remains critical. The recent spell of heavy rain in Punjab has resulted in 35 reported deaths and severe flooding in numerous districts.

A significant evacuation effort has been underway, with 26,250 individuals rescued from waterlogged areas and relocated to safer places. The affected districts include Patiala, Rupnagar, Moga, and Ludhiana, with 14,296, 2,200, 250, and 300 people evacuated, respectively.

According to government data, the floods have impacted 1,422 villages across 18 districts in Punjab, namely Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Faridkot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Kapurthala, Patiala, Moga, Ludhiana, SAS Nagar, Jalandhar, Sangrur, SBS Nagar, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Mansa, and Pathankot.

While floodwaters have receded in many parts of Punjab and Haryana, authorities are actively engaged in relief and rehabilitation operations in Sangrur district. They are also working on repairing breaches in 'dhussi bundhs' (earthen embankments) along the Ghaggar River. The restoration efforts have begun with a focus on sealing a 150-ft-wide breach that appeared in Mansa near Chandpura Bundh in the Budhlada sub-division.

The breach has resulted in the ingress of river water into Gorakhnath and Birewala Dogran villages, where water levels have risen up to 6 feet. Authorities are urging residents to evacuate to safer areas, as there are concerns that water may affect other nearby villages as well.

The situation remains challenging as authorities continue to address the impact of the breach and provide necessary support to the affected communities. Efforts are underway to control the water flow and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in the flooded areas.
