AI used for the right reasons! Delhi man outsmarts scammer using AI, tracks his location and makes him apologise
PTC Web Desk: A man from Delhi turned the tables on a scammer by using ChatGPT to create a fake payment page that secretly captured the fraudster’s location and even took a photo of him. His detailed experience, shared on Reddit, quickly went viral.
The incident began when the man received a Facebook message from someone pretending to be his college senior, who is now an IAS officer. The impostor claimed that a CRPF friend was being transferred and wanted to sell expensive appliances and furniture at extremely low prices. The Delhi man grew doubtful because his real senior already had his personal number. After confirming with the genuine senior that it was a scam, he decided to trap the fraudster.
Soon after, another number, with an Army profile picture, contacted him and sent a QR code for payment. The Delhi man pretended he was unable to scan it. Meanwhile, he used ChatGPT to generate the code for a simple website that could access the visitor’s GPS location and front camera. He uploaded it online and sent the link to the scammer, telling him it would help speed up the payment process.
Hoping to close the fake deal, the scammer clicked the link. Instantly, the page captured his exact coordinates, IP address, and a clear photo of his face.
The Delhi man then sent the scammer his own photo and location details. Shocked and scared, the scammer started begging for forgiveness and promised to stop cheating people.
The man later posted screenshots of the entire chat on Reddit under the title, “Used ChatGPT to locate a scammer and made him beg me.” Many users praised him for using AI in a smart and positive way. One commenter wrote, “Mad respect. Make this open source so others can use it too.” Another added, “AI used for the right reasons!”
Some users, however, pointed out that building such a tracking tool may require technical knowledge and that ChatGPT’s limitations are designed to prevent misuse.
