'Doge' meme dog dies: The shiba inu dog named Kabosu, who inspired the viral "doge" meme and cryptocurrency Dogecoin, has died.

“Today Kabosu, our community's shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person,” the official cryptocurrency account posted on X on Friday. Dogecoin added, “She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love.” They further mentioned Kabosu's popularity, noting that her impact "across the world is immeasurable," and urged people to carry on her legacy by "keeping her spirit and her family in your heart." "We are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours," it further read.

Kabosu rose to prominence as the "Doge" meme, which inspired the establishment of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin (at first as a joke), creating a lasting influence on followers all over the world. Later, Dogecoin's success prompted the creation of other dog-themed tokens such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Floki (FLOKI), which have since become a key sector in the cryptocurrency market.

Kabosu's owner said in a blog post that they will have a "farewell party for Kabo-chan on Sunday, May 26" at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, from 1 pm to 4 pm.

The owner also revealed that the night before her death, Kabosu "ate her rice and drank plenty of water, as usual." She died peacefully and "quietly" in her sleep the next day, while her owner stroked her. Kabosu was diagnosed with leukaemia and liver illness in 2022.
