The escalator malfunctioned and sped downward. The escalator accelerated suddenly. The people riding on it were collapsing on one another.
The video shows that people on the parallel escalator were trying to pull others to safety. The victims were found piled up at the bottom of the escalator. The victims were on the top of one another, looking for help. This incident caused many serious injuries. According to firefighters, nearly seven people sustained serious injuries. Most of the injured were Russians. They were in Rome for a Champion's League soccer game between CSKA Moscow and Roma.
