With 20 deaths, Punjab Covid-19 toll reaches 16,790; 6,656 fresh infections

Mohali: Punjab on Monday reported 6,656 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 6,70,460. As many as 20 patients succumbed to coronavirus. The death toll has reached 16,790. These included Amritsar (242), Bathinda (95), Faridkot (85), Fazilka (34), Ferozepur (204), Fatehgarh Sahib (69), Gurdaspur (99), Hoshiarpur (180), Jalandhar (299), Kapurthala (150), Ludhiana (804); Mansa (31); Moga (51); Muktsar (14); Pathankot (91), Patiala (892), Ropar (284), SAS Nagar (670), SBS Nagar (11) and Tarn Taran (88). The deaths were reported from Amritsar (2);  Bathinda (3), Hoshiarpur (2), Jalandhar (2), Ludhiana (2), Moga (2), Pathankot (1) Patiala-(4) and SAS Nagar (2). Meanwhile, amid rising cases of coronavirus in Punjab, the Director of School Education on Monday announced that all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will continue to remain closed till January 25. As per the previous order, the schools and colleges in Punjab were directed to remain shut till January 15. Although the Punjab Government had issued new guidelines, there was no mention regarding the reopening of schools. Therefore, several students were facing hardships as there was no clarification on the reopening of schools. "ECI extends ban on physical rallies and roadshows until 22 January 2022 ECI grants relaxation for the political parties to the extent that indoor meetings of a maximum of 300 persons or 50 percent of the capacity of the hall or the prescribed limit set by SDMA," ECI informed in a tweet.
