18 killed, two children found dead in hot car in France as heatwave crisis deepens in Europe
PTC News Desk: At least 18 people died in France, including two children left in a hot car as Europe reels under severe heatwave with temperature soaring in several cities on Monday.
A severe heatwave continued to grip parts of Europe, forcing schools in France to close or adjust their schedules, while forecasters in Britain warned that June temperature records could be broken this week.
In France, temperatures soared to unprecedented levels. Bordeaux, located in the country's western wine region, recorded 41.9°C, surpassing the previous record set in August last year. In the central French city of Poitiers, temperatures reached 41.2°C, breaking a record that had stood since 1947.
Spain also faced extreme heat. In the northern coastal city of San Sebastián, traditionally known for its mild climate, temperatures were expected to hit 40°C—more than twice the city's average temperature for June 22.
Italy issued red heatwave alerts for 12 cities as soaring temperatures put pressure on public services and infrastructure.
In Turin, utility company Iren said it had doubled worker shifts and deployed additional generators to deal with scattered power outages caused by increased demand on the electricity grid.
