8 ex-Navy officers sentences to death in Qatar, India to challenge verdict

New Delhi, October 26: In a shocking turn of events, eight former officers of the Indian Navy have been sentenced to death in Qatar on allegations of espionage. The Indian government, through its foreign ministry, has expressed its deep concern and has vowed to contest the court's decision.

These individuals, comprising highly decorated officers who had previously commanded major Indian warships, were employed by Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, a private company responsible for offering training and related services to Qatar's armed forces.

The case took a distressing turn as their bail pleas were repeatedly rejected, and their detention was extended by Qatari authorities. Today, the Court of First Instance in Qatar rendered its judgment, delivering a sentence of death for the accused. In response to the verdict, the Indian foreign ministry issued a statement conveying their profound shock and concern. They emphasised their eagerness to obtain the detailed judgment in this matter and confirmed that they are in constant communication with the family members and the legal team representing the accused. The ministry has also stated its commitment to exploring all available legal avenues to address the situation.

The statement issued by the foreign ministry underscored the significance of this case for the Indian government, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to providing consular and legal support to the affected individuals. It further declared the Indian government's intent to engage with Qatari authorities to address and challenge the verdict.

This development has not only raised concerns about the well-being of the accused navy veterans but has also stirred diplomatic tensions between India and Qatar. As the legal battle unfolds, both nations will be closely monitoring the proceedings to ensure that justice is served, while also preserving diplomatic relations.
