Yemen appoints new PM: Amid the ongoing heightened tensions in Yemen due to a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels which prompted recent retaliatory strikes by both the United States and the United Kingdom, Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, Yemen's foreign minister, has been appointed as the country's new Prime Minister.

Bin Mubarak has notably replaced Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed amid the escalation of tensions in the Red Sea.

As per the media sources, Bin Mubarak was named premier of Yemen on Monday, according to a decision issued by the country's Presidential Leadership Council. The former prime minister was given the position of presidential adviser.

Former Yemeni ambassador to the US, Bin Mubarak, is widely viewed as a fierce opponent of the Houthi rebels.

He first gained prominence in 2015 when, amid a power struggle with then-President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, he was abducted by the Houthis while serving as Yemen's presidential chief of staff.

The capture of bin Mubarak played a role in the political turmoil in Yemen, sparking conflicts between the Houthis, Hadi's presidential guards, and ultimately resulting in the government's resignation along with the president.

In 2018, Bin Mubarak was also designated as the country's representative to the United Nations.
The Houthi rebels, an Iran-aligned faction, initiated the attacks in response to the Gaza conflict involving Israel. They have asserted that they will continue their assaults until Israel ceases hostilities in Gaza.
