Hindu trader stabbed to death in shop 48 hours before Bangladesh polls

PTC News Desk: A 62-year-old Hindu businessman was allegedly stabbed to death inside his shop in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district on Monday night, just days before the country’s elections, police said.

The victim, identified as Sushen Chandra Sarkar, was a rice trader and owner of “Messrs Bhai Bhai Enterprise” located at the Bogar Bazar intersection in Trishal upazila. He lived in Southkanda village in the same region. Police said the attack occurred around 11 pm when unknown assailants entered his shop and attacked him with sharp weapons. After killing him, the attackers reportedly pulled down the shutter, left his body inside the shop, and escaped.

Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Firoz Hossain confirmed the incident and said a probe has been launched to trace and arrest the culprits. Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the killing and are examining all possible angles.

In recent months, Bangladesh has witnessed several mob attacks involving minority communities, reportedly following the death of anti-India student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. On December 18, garment worker Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and later set on fire over alleged blasphemy. Soon after, Amrit Mondal, described by police as a habitual criminal, was beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari district over extortion allegations.

Similar incidents were reported last year as well. Hindu trader Liton Chandra Das was killed in a mob attack in Kaliganj, while fuel station worker Ripon Saha was run over and killed while trying to stop a vehicle from leaving a petrol pump without making payment.
