PTC News Desk: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined a request to meet Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge ahead of the INDIA bloc’s planned march to the Supreme Court on Monday.

The two leaders had sought an appointment between 4 pm and 5 pm on October 12 to submit a memorandum. Their demands include action against alleged “vote chori” (vote theft), the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and a return to paper ballots.

According to sources, the Chief Justice’s response was sent to both leaders by email. The issues they wanted to raise are already pending before the Supreme Court, making a meeting inappropriate.

Why is Opposition protesting ?

The protest centres on allegations that voters have been wrongly removed from electoral rolls and that the lists have been manipulated during the SIR exercise.

Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of favouring the BJP and have demanded accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The controversy intensified following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over a period of 10 months, mainly regarding decisions linked to the SIR exercise.

The Election Commission has maintained that differences of opinion are a normal part of its decision-making process. It has also said its orders are legally supported and follow the prescribed procedures.

Opposition plans 'march for democracy'

The Congress has named Monday’s protest “Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy” and asked participants to gather at the Connaught Place–Barakhamba Road junction at 1.30 pm.

Rahul Gandhi said young people, Opposition parties and civil society groups would march towards the Supreme Court. He also accused the police and BJP supporters of assaulting peaceful protesters in Delhi on Saturday. Mallikarjun Kharge said the Opposition leaders wanted to seek the Chief Justice’s intervention. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of creating unrest and claimed that the police deployment and detentions on Saturday showed the government was concerned about the protest.

Opposition met President on Friday

On Friday, police stopped Opposition MPs at Vijay Chowk. Several MPs staged a sit-in, while a 10-member delegation went to Rashtrapati Bhavan to seek President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention over their demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. After the meeting, Opposition leaders said the President had asked them to provide evidence of the alleged electoral irregularities and had agreed to examine their concerns.Rahul Gandhi said he was “shocked” that the President had neither denied nor questioned the allegations. He claimed that evidence of alleged vote theft was widely known and said the Opposition would submit it to her.
