India issues advisory for citizens in Nepal amid Gen Z protests; 20 dead and 300 injured
PTC Web Desk: India on Tuesday issued an advisory to its citizens in Nepal following large-scale violent protests led by Gen Z demonstrators that left at least 20 persons dead and over 300 injured.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the situation, extending condolences to the families of those killed and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. "We are closely monitoring developments in Nepal and are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families," the MEA said.
The ministry also acknowledged the curfew imposed in Kathmandu and several other cities and urged Indian nationals in Nepal to remain cautious and follow the directives issued by local authorities. Calling Nepal a “close friend and neighbour,” the MEA further appealed to all sides to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue.
The protests were triggered after the government in Nepal banned 26 social media platforms—including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X—citing the need for tighter regulation. However, the move sparked massive unrest among young people, many of whom took to the streets.
Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces, prompting the deployment of the Nepali army around key sites, including the parliament complex in New Baneshwor. Amid mounting pressure and the deadliest youth-led uprising in years, Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, taking moral responsibility for the violence.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli initially defended the decision, stating his government would not tolerate “anomalies and arrogance” that undermine the nation. But facing intense pushback, the government later revoked the ban, with the Ministry of Information ordering agencies to restore access to the blocked platforms.
