India no longer linked to violent crimes in Canada: Ottawa signals shift ahead of PM Carney's New Delhi visit
PTC News Desk: Ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit, Canada appears to be improving its relationship with India after tensions reached a low point under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. ????
The main dispute began after Trudeau accused India of being involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen whom India had declared a terrorist in 2020. However, the current Canadian government has now said that India is no longer believed to be connected to violent crimes in Canada. These comments were made before Carney’s planned visit to India, with officials highlighting better security talks and cooperation between the two countries.
“I really don’t think we’d be taking this trip if we thought these kinds of activities were continuing,” a senior Canadian official was quoted as saying by the Toronto Star
Canadian officials also said they are no longer worried about interference or repression by Indian agents. This marks a major shift after years of tension caused by allegations of foreign interference and violence. Canada is now looking to strengthen both security and economic ties with India. ????????????????
Earlier, relations worsened after Nijjar’s killing in 2023, when Trudeau said there was credible evidence linking Indian government agents to the murder. After the incident, Canada charged four people in connection with the killing and investigated other violent cases allegedly involving foreign actors.
Previously, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had also claimed links between India’s government and violent activities in Canada, including threats and attacks on activists.
