India votes in favour of UN resolution against Israeli settlements in Palestine
PTC News Desk: India supported a United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements in Palestine. The resolution, which condemns settlement activity in the "Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan," was passed on Thursday. The United States and Canada are two of the seven countries that oppose it. The vote was omitted by eighteen countries.
This comes just weeks after India voted on a UN resolution calling for an "immediate, durable, and sustained humanitarian truce" between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Over 11,000 people have died in Gaza as a result of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which was sparked by the October 7 attacks on Israel. The Hamas attacks killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and took over 200 hostages.
Sources in the government explained India's decision to abstain in the previous vote, saying the country is concerned about the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza but also believes there can be no equivocation on terror.
"There was no explicit condemnation of the terrorist attacks on October 7 in the UNGA Resolution. Prior to the vote on the main resolution, an amendment was proposed to include this aspect," a source stated
According to the source, India voted in favour of the amendment with 88 votes in favour, but not the required two-thirds majority.
